Healthy Kids Club

Healthy Kids Club (HKC)
Afterschool Snackcs or Meals

What is it?  Snacks and/or meals at an after school program in the form of a congregate meal for children.

Target population:  Children 18 and under participating in an after school enrichment program, especially those who might not get supper at home.

Funding source: Snacks and meals are reimbursed through the US Dept. of Agriculture, via the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Summary:  The Healthy Kids Club Program is a program in which Care and Share partners with a variety of afterschool programs to provide nutritious snacks or suppers for at-risk children.   The snack/meal must be accompanied by  additional "enrichment activities," such as academic support, tutoring, mentoring, arts and crafts, music, nutrition education, or community service projects. Sports and recreation can be part of an afterschool program as long as participation is open to all.  Care and Share currently provides service to  21 sites in throughout our Southern Colorado.  Food for this program is funded through the Colorado Department of Human Services.  This year, Care and Share has opened several new sites and  will provide over 65,000 snacks to children in need this year. To become a site under Care and Share, a site must be located near a school that has 50% or higher free and reduced lunch or is qualified through census data as having 50% percent of the population at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.
