Hello Care and Share friends!
You may remember Care and Share piloted a food rescue program with Kum & Go last year. What started with one of our partners picking up unsold fresh food items from one Kum & Go location several times each week has grown to include 16 partners picking up food that would otherwise be thrown away from 16 Kum & Go stores across El Paso County. All of the sandwiches, bread, pastries, and other fresh-made items that were still perfectly good to eat were being thrown into a dumpster a year ago. Now, our partners are picking up that food and thousands of our neighbors facing hunger have access to nutritious ready-to-eat meals and snacks.
In the first year alone, this program has rescued 110,202 pounds of food. That’s 91,835 meals! Our sister food banks in four other states have launched food rescue programs at their local Kum & Go stores. Kum & Go is an invaluable partner in Care and Share’s fight to end hunger throughout Southern Colorado, and we are so grateful for their commitment to reducing food waste and ensuring every one of our hungry neighbors has the food they need!
