The Result of our First Holiday Mobile Food Distribution

December 4, 2018

Hi friends of Care and Share!

We want to give an update on a special Mobile Food Pantry we held at our Colorado Springs distribution center on November 30th. You might have heard about it on the news or on social media. We have received an abundance of food from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This is food we needed to get out in a timely manner, so in response, we decided to get creative and hold a series of Mobile Food Pantries at our Colorado Springs distribution center. You can see in the picture below, we had a great group of volunteers help us with the distribution! They were fantastic and did such a great job!

The distribution was drive-thru style. This means our guests didn’t have to get out of their cars. Volunteers and staff packed the food into boxes and loaded them right into the vehicles. The atmosphere was energetic. Our staff and volunteers were moving around and loading food- sweet potatoes, carrots, frozen blueberries, milk, cereal, and bread- for three straight hours. We knew we were able to help a lot of people that afternoon. But we didn’t know the exact impact until we received the numbers this week. During the event, we served 357 families, which included 906 adults and 676 children! That’s incredible. The overwhelming response to the distribution also illustrates an issue we can’t ignore- there is still a great need for food assistance in our community. During this time of year we know that many of our neighbors in need have difficult choices to make. We hope that this food will allow them to have a more enjoyable holiday with family and friends, without having to worry about where their next meal is coming from!

We also want to give a special shout out to the gentleman pictured below. David arrived at our distribution center in need of food. By the time he made it through the line, he saw how badly we needed an extra set of helping hands. So he graciously jumped in and volunteered until the end of the event! It goes to show that we really do have a great community that watches out for each other.

We have a few more Mobile Food Pantry distributions happening at our distribution center. If you would like to volunteer at one of them, please reach out to eric@careandshare.org. For more information on dates, go to careandshare.org and click on the “Find Food” tab.
