What it Means to be a Member of Feeding America

Hi Care and Share friends,

We talk a lot about how we are a member of Feeding America, and we want to go into a little more detail about what exactly that means.

The Feeding America network is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. It consists of 200 food banks across the country, and each is designated to serve a specific service area. Our food bank is part of that network. Each year, we collect and distribute more than 23 million pounds of food. Because of Feeding America, we’re able to work with farmers, manufacturers, and retailers to rescue perfectly good food that may otherwise end up in a landfill and give it to our neighbors in need.  A good example of this is our partnership with Walmart. Every week, our drivers stop by dozens of Walmart stores in our service area. They meet with the store leads and collect hundreds of pounds of food to bring back to the food bank. Those meals are then distributed to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and meal programs.

There are five Feeding America food banks in Colorado. We are the only food bank serving the 31 counties across Southern Colorado.
