Care and Share Volunteers Rescue More Than 21,000 lbs. of Onions!

Happy Friday, Care and Share friends!

We have been busy preparing for the holiday season, but we want to take the time to share with you all an amazing experience we had with our dedicated volunteers. A couple of Fridays ago, about 45 volunteers traveled to Rocky Ford with some staff from our food bank and Community Food Share. The reason: to glean onions at the CSU Research Farm (Arkansas Valley Research Center).

What is gleaning? It’s the process of picking up left-over crops to make sure they don’t go to waste– in other words, food rescue. In Rocky Ford, our volunteers were able to rescue 21,168 pounds of onions in just three hours. How amazing is that?

Here’s what it looked like when we brought all of the onions back to our distribution center. 19 bins ready to go out to our neighbors in need.

Thank you to DAWSON and the La Junta Walmart for sending out dozens of their employees to volunteer with us for the day . Their support truly makes a difference.
