Within Reach Update

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

– Winston Churchill

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and we truly could not accomplish our work without them. As we reflect on our most recently completed fiscal year, we understand now more than ever that volunteers have allowed us to soar higher than we ever thought possible—and they will continue to be our wings until we have ensured access to food to all of our Southern Colorado neighbors at risk of hunger.

Our volunteers come from every walk of life, from every background, because they believe that no one should go hungry. Many of our volunteers have experienced food insecurity at some point in their lives and are now in a place to give back. Many others have never experienced hunger, and want to make this a reality for all members of their community. All of our volunteers know that we cannot reach our full potential on an empty stomach.

We doubled our cadre of volunteers throughout the course of the last five years. During our last fiscal year, we benefited from more than 15,367 instances of volunteerism, culminating in 46,237 hours! Here are some interesting tidbits about our volunteer corps:

  • 1% of Care and Share volunteers are Traditionalist, born 1901-1945

  • 14% of Care and Share volunteers are Baby Boomers, born 1946-1964

  • 26% of Care and Share volunteers are Generation X, born 1965-1980

  • 40% of Care and Share volunteers are Millennials, born 1981-1999

  • 18% of Care and Share volunteers are New Generation, born 2000+
