Volunteer Highlight | Tom Hire

Good morning friends of Care and Share!
Please enjoy this month’s volunteer highlight.

Tom Hire, a Care and Share volunteer of several years, has always had a passion for helping others. After having worked with the American Red Cross for some time, Tom and his wife rediscovered their desire to serve their community and decided to join the efforts of Care and Share. As soon as they started, they were pleasantly surprised by the true compassion demonstrated by other volunteers and the fulfilling nature of giving their time to the local hungry. Three hours of volunteering weekly quickly became four, then five, until Tom became a fully dedicated volunteer at the food bank. Helping people who simply do not have enough is what Tom cares about the most.

Tom knows first-hand that struggling with food is a real problem that many people face every day. His son, who works up to forty-two hours a week, finds that the most difficult part of financial hardship is providing his family with enough food while at the same time paying for his children’s extra school fees. Having a family member who experiences these obstacles is a major motivator for the work that Tom does.
At Care and Share, Tom has found his niche in the transportation department where he works to load and unload food from trucks. Along the way, he has built many friendships with other volunteers who share a similar passion for offering aid to those who need it most. When asked about his experience at Care and Share, Tom says, “We really care about what we do, and I encourage other people to take up the same urge to try it. You might like it.” Care and Share is proud and thankful for its volunteers like Tom who are devoted to the improvement of our community.
