Volunteer Highlight | Suzann

Good morning friends of Care and Share!
Please enjoy this month’s volunteer highlight.

Suzann and her family moved to Colorado Springs to retire. As she was packing up her home and preparing for the move from Illinois to Colorado, Suzann remembers thinking what am I going to do with myself? She had been following her husband around the world throughout his military career. Suzann also worked in the military as a social worker. For a long time, she dreamed of planting roots and giving back to the community.

Fortunately, when they arrived at their new home, one of the first people she met was a Care and Share employee. The next week, Suzann was an official Care and Share volunteer. She works exclusively at Westside Cares, a Care and Share partner agency that provides rent assistance, utility assistance, and other resources like clothes and food. Suzann helps those struggling to make ends meet apply for food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Although her job can be emotionally taxing, Suzann says, “When you volunteer, you give to other people and sometimes discover things about yourself.” It is also a rewarding job because she is truly making a positive difference in people’s lives. She is continually reminded of all that we have to be thankful for and of the kindness and tenacity of the human spirit.  Suzann notes that “These people really struggle and I notice that they help each other whenever they can.” Thank you Suzann for all that you do to make our world a better place!
