Volunteer Highlight: Cheryl Schrader

Cheryl is training to assist our Volunteer Services and Community Outreach Director with all-things volunteer coordination, and has been such an asset to the department. She is learning the inner workings of our scheduling system and database, responding to volunteer inquiries, and shadowing tours to begin leading orientations. She is filling a critical need so that we can continually improve response times and quality customer service to volunteers.

After a recent lay off in Tennessee, Cheryl’s husband was offered a position in Colorado Springs and they jumped at the chance to relocate in September 2014. It was the break they had hoped for since they fell in love with Colorado Springs on a vacation in 2012. Cheryl brings a rich knowledge base to her work at Care and Share, as she has been an administrative professional for the past thirty years. She started her career as a secretary at a funeral home in Alabama and ultimately secured a position with BDM Corporation assisting the Director of Operations and Senior Vice President.

With family and work commitments, Cheryl hadn’t had time to make volunteering a priority. However, when she moved here, she sought out ways to get involved in the community. She quickly became part of the Care and Share family just in time for the holidays. She started out sorting and packing food and off-loading on the receiving dock. She was enthusiastic to put her organizational skills to work, so we seized the opportunity and are so glad we did! Among other things, you may see Cheryl around the warehouse leading tours or you may talk to her when you have questions about volunteering. I encourage you to get to know her, she’ll make you feel welcome and bring a brightness to your day.
