Story Type: Programs
We know that eating healthy on a limited budget can be a hard thing to do, and many of us don’t even know where to begin. That’s where Cooking Matters comes in. Care and Share Food Bank is a satellite partner of Cooking Matters Colorado, a campaign of Share Our Strength, which is a national organization working to end hunger and poverty. Through the courses, our Cooking Matters team teaches families on a low-income salary how to stretch their dollar at the grocery store and cook healthy meals.
We partner with various community organizations in El Paso, Pueblo, and Fremont Counties- like partner food pantries, housing complexes, health care centers, and schools – to bring free six-week courses to their locations. This helps make the classes accessible to our neighbors participating in the program. Each week, instructors present new recipes that are based on a budget of $1.80 per serving or less. Participants, ranging from kids to seniors, are able to get hands-on during the courses, making the meals themselves.
Our Cooking Matters team also offers free grocery store tours, where participants meet with our experts on-site and learn tips and tricks for eating healthy on a budget.
We are always in need of volunteers to help with our Cooking Matters program! If you are interested in learning more about volunteering at a course site or at a grocery store tour, please reach out to our Community Engagement Director at Eric@careandshare.org.
