Feeding the Children of Colorado

Amber works tirelessly in her community of Dolores to feed children at risk of hunger. She has seen more than one child in the classroom say, “I just can’t think. I’m just hungry.”

Amber knows what it’s like to have to stretch a grocery budget. Her husband was working a successful job in construction when the economy collapsed.  Their family went from being very comfortable to enrolling in the food stamp program. She remembers standing in line at the grocery store one day with a stack of coupons, asking the cashier “wasn’t that a dollar?,” when someone behind her in line said, “I wish I could pull out my food stamp card from my Coach bag.” Amber was at her wit’s end, and couldn’t help but respond. She explained that her family lost everything in their household, and she kept this one bag because it was a gift from her husband for their tenth wedding anniversary. She had to sell her wedding ring to save their house, so the bag was very important to her.  She said “You do not know my story. You do not know what I’ve been through in life.” She started grocery shopping in the middle of the night to avoid any future embarrassment.

She was grateful when her husband found work again, but she knows that there are so many children in Dolores whose families aren’t as fortunate. She said, “These kids have nothing and it is not their fault.  It became my goal to feed the kids that have absolutely no control over their situations.”
