How We Helped: Food to Feed Their Family
When our Mobile Market stopped by Xaiver’s neighborhood, the seven-year old happily helped his mom carry a bag of food because it had one of his favorite meals in it — pizza. “I love pizza because of the cheese and the crust,” he told us. “Food makes me feel happy because it gives me more energy.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Xaiver’s mom, Shayla, and her spouse were both temporarily laid off from their jobs. She is a senior caregiver and her partner does local roofing work. Shayla said they’ve been struggling to afford enough food for their entire family. She would often go without meals to make sure all four of her children were never hungry. “We had to change everything,” she said. “As a mom, I was stressed and depressed. I was like, ‘What are we going to do and how long is this going to be?’”
After receiving emergency food bags from our Mobile Market, she felt relieved. She was able to take home multiple bags filled with boxed goods, canned fruits and vegetables, protein bars, peanut butter and jelly for sandwiches, and Xaiver’s favorite, pizza. “It’s so nice because we can walk up. We don’t have to drive anywhere or go anywhere. We tell them how many people are in our family and they give us what we need,” she said.
Shayla expressed gratitude for the community, especially for the neighbors who have rallied around us to help provide food for her family. “I appreciate everything that Care and Share has done to help us out — and to the people who are stepping up to help other people, thank you. It takes a lot off me and helps me out knowing that my kids are able to eat.”
