The Schwenke Family

From Fountain, CO

Story Type: Volunteers

For the past two years, Stephanie Schwenke, her husband, Doug, and their children, Daniel and Ellie, spend one Friday morning each month helping Care and Share Food Bank distribute fresh produce and staple pantry items to our neighbors in need in the Fountain area. They’re able to do this through Care and Share’s Peak Vista Mobile Food Pantry. Stephanie said they initially started volunteering as a family to fulfill community service hours for the kids’ National Honor Society requirements, but it quickly developed into a passion for all of them. “We get to work with friends every month that we do not get to see in our neighborhoods or places of work day in and day out,” Stephanie said. “And that goes for the people that we both serve and serve with!”

Stephanie and her family have never directly experienced hunger, but she told us that volunteering at the Mobile Food Pantry has enabled them to see hunger first-hand in their community. Through their experience, they’ve learned that the people they serve once a month are not different than them. “We would not trade this experience for anything. We have been blessed and honored to serve Care and Share and the people in Fountain.”
