Story Type: Volunteers
Peggy Hector, a loyal Care and Share volunteer, doesn’t shy away from working hard. After Peggy retired, she was a caretaker for her mother until she passed. “Then I needed something useful to do… So I wanted to do some volunteer work with other people,” she said.
She saw Care and Share was looking for volunteers, and because she lives within walking distance, she decided to get involved. Peggy volunteers several days of the week helping us reduce our organization’s environmental impact. You can often find her in the distribution center, cutting and bailing recyclable materials from food shipments to send to the recycling center, instead of the landfill.
She admits she was a bit nervous to begin in a new volunteer role, but says, “You’re always learning something new each time, and every day is different!” These days, Peggy has become so well-versed in Care and Share’s work that she helps groups sorting donated food and answering their questions. She says Care and Share is the place to come if you are ready to work hard and be around a group of great people!
Peggy says volunteering makes her feel like she’s part of the community. When asked to describe her volunteer experience in one word, she said: rewarding. “I never knew how important giving back was until last year, when Care and Share had the food distribution here and the cars lined up all the way down the road,” she shared. “I didn’t realize how many people needed food every week.” We are so grateful for the dedication of volunteers like Peggy.
