How We Helped: Nutritious Food
Dove Creek, Colorado is located in the Southwest corner of our state. It is a small, rural community with a population of less than 700. Nearly 23% of its residents are living below the poverty level. Many seniors are living on social security and are supporting other family members because job opportunities in Dove Creek are scarce.
Some families in this community live with no running water or indoor plumbing. Without wells, which are very expensive to have drilled, many Dove Creek residents have to haul their water from the closest city to fill their cisterns. Some residents use woodstoves in the winter months and run out of heat when they run out of fuel to burn. The nearest grocery store is 35 miles away.
Thankfully, Dove Creek is home to Kathleen and her husband who work as Sheriff Office dispatchers. They also lead the efforts at the food pantry in Dove Creek, where they serve an average of 70 families or 204 individuals each month. The food pantry serves all of Dolores County which has a population of nearly 2,000 people.
Kathleen said that she sees “a lot of families that have to live together here, which is so unlike any other place in Colorado that I’ve lived. I always thought Colorado was kind of lucky, but not here.” This community, however, is very tight knit, and neighbors are always helping neighbors. They look out for each other. The food that is distributed to this small town does more than provide nourishment to those at risk of hunger, it sends a message of hope.
