Story Type: Volunteers
Programs Used: Food Bank
Deb Ray has been volunteering at Care and Share Food Bank since 2013. She remembers seeing a segment on the local news about a Care and Share food drive. “I was looking for some type of volunteer activity in the community,” Deb told us. “Curious about Care and Share, I researched the website and contacted them about possible ways I could help.”
Deb spent most of her career working in the non-profit sector, which she found to be extremely rewarding. After retiring, she knew she wanted a volunteer experience that was meaningful and had a daily impact in the community. What Deb does for the food bank truly means a lot to us. She provides administrative assistance to different teams within the organization, like Development, Operations, and Agency Relations. She helps with data entry, form and document creation, organizing, researching, filing, and other duties. “I run the weekly Volunteer Hub for Eric, the Community Engagement Director,” Deb explains. “Also, last year, I coordinated the eight-month ‘Cooking for a Cause’ series. If I can take some of the more routine tasks, I feel that helps free up time for the various team members to focus on the details that grow the mission of Care and Share.”
Deb says since she has been at Care and Share, she has learned about how prevalent hunger is in Southern Colorado communities- more than she had originally thought- and how it can happen to anyone at any time.
“The entire Care and Share staff truly exemplifies “care.” Everyone is welcomed and valued and deeply appreciated,” Deb said. “I have never felt like “just a volunteer.” I have always been treated as a member of each team, and I love being here twice a week.”
