Story Type: Volunteers
If you come to our food bank when Chapman Bullard is volunteering, it’s easy to spot his smile and friendly personality. Nearly two years ago, Chapman made the decision to give some of his time to volunteering at a community organization. That’s how he found Care and Share, and we’re so glad he did. Ever since he came onboard, Chapman has been one of our most dedicated and consistent volunteers. He comes in multiple times a week and helps in several different areas across the distribution center.
“When I first started here, I was doing two things: [assembling] Send Hunger Packing [bags for school children], and sorting food,” Chapman said. From there on, he made his way over to the Welcome Center, helped pick orders, and has even gone out on routes with our drivers to pick up and deliver food. He says he enjoys learning every aspect of what goes on here at Care and Share. “My favorite role is the Welcome Center. You get to see the frontlines of where the food is going and who is taking it to the people who need it.”
For Chapman, there’s also a personal connection to volunteering at Care and Share. It was not too long ago that he found himself unable to afford enough nutritious food. He found help through SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and at a local food bank. “I had been on food assistance myself,” he told us. “This is my way of giving back.”
He’s glad he started volunteering here, and he encourages anyone interested in giving back to the community to reach out about opportunities at Care and Share. “It feels wonderful to volunteer here. The amount of food we get in our doors and out of our doors every day is incredible. Care and Share is a great place.”
