Carol and Don Snodgrass

From Colorado Springs, CO

Story Type: Volunteers

Programs Used: Food Bank

How We Helped: Hope

Carol and Don Snodgrass are still working hard even though they’re retired. Don has been volunteering at Care and Share Food Bank for four years, and a couple years ago, Carol decided she wanted to join him. When they first moved to Colorado Springs, the pair knew they needed to find the right place to spend their time. “I knew I wanted to do something once I retired and this was the most logical place. I absolutely love it,” said Carol. Carol says appreciates the variety of changing responsibilities around the office. She now volunteers three days a week doing any number of things, like writing thank you notes to donors, leading volunteer orientation tours, and calling seniors enrolled in our Commodity Supplemental Food Program.

Don spends his time in the distribution center doing, as he jokes, the “particular chores no one else wants to do.” He helps to make sure things are clean and sanitary. He also puts together emergency food bags for people who come to our distribution center looking for assistance.

When asked why he does this work, Don responded, “I think this is a basic thing. If you don’t get food to people, every other service really doesn’t matter. If people aren’t getting enough to eat, whatever other services they might be working with will never get their full attention… I like the idea of taking care of that basic need.”
