Programs Used: Gunnison Country Food Pantry
How We Helped: Nutritious Food
Ashton and his girlfriend have been volunteering at the Gunnison Country Food Pantry since they moved to the area. They love to volunteer and to feel like they are part of the community. Ashton says that giving back is “the best feeling in the world.” They also receive food from the pantry.
Their finances were stretched to the limit when Ashton’s brother died and they had to spend what little they had in savings to travel to his funeral. Even though Ashton and his girlfriend both work, they don’t make quite enough to make ends meet. They are “right on the poverty line.”
The first time Ashton volunteered at the pantry, he and his girlfriend received enough food to last for the rest of the month, including sweet corn and apples. Since then, he has made friends and connections. The first job he got when he moved to Gunnison was with the help of someone he met at the pantry. Although Ashton and his girlfriend are still stretched to the financial limit, he says that “we do fine with the food pantry’s help.”
