(December 1, 2009) - During a canned food drive in November, the Colorado State University-Pueblo Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collected more than 1,000 pounds of food for the needy.
The SAAC collected a total of 1,182 pounds of food for Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, a food bank and member of Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, partly funded by Pikes Peak United Way, has provided food to needy families throughout southern Colorado for more than 20 years.
The bulk of the canned food was collected at the 2009 Al Kaly Shrine Basketball Classic, where fans were encouraged to bring canned food items. Thanks to the support of the community, the holiday canned food drive became the largest and most successful canned food collection initiative ever undertaken by the CSU Department of Athletics.
"We are thrilled with the results of this food drive," said CSU-Pueblo Associate Athletic Director and SAAC Advisor, Niki Whitaker. "It is a testament to the community that they could offer this level of support for the needy in such trying economic times. I thank the Pueblo community and the CSU-Pueblo student athletes for their support of this project."
