Subsidized Programs

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP)
TEFAP provides food assistance to people in need through the distribution of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) commodities. The foods are distributed free of charge on a monthly basis to recipients who must only declare their need and reside in certain counties.

TEFAP food is distributed through various neighborhood food pantries so recipients don't have to travel great distances to get it. In addition, Care and Share is often able to supplement the government food with fresh produce and other items to increase the nutritional value of the government food.

Last year, Care and Share’s TEFAP program distributed over million pounds of food, providing hunger relief to thousands of people in Colorado. Care and Share manages the TEFAP program in El Paso, Alamosa, Baca, Bent, Chaffee, Cheyenne, Conejos, Costilla, Custer, Dolores, Fremont, Hinsdale, Kiowa, La Plata, Las Animas, Lincoln, Montezuma, Ouray, Prowers, Rio Grande, Saguache, San Juan, San Miguel, and Teller counties.

For more information about the TEFAP program please contact Danette Flickinger, USDA and Food Safety Program Manager at 719-434-4683 or danette@careandshare.org

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a U.S.D.A. supplemental food program targeting low-income senior citizens age 60 and over. To qualify for CSFP benefits, applicants must meet several income and residency requirements, and provide a photo identification and proof of address.

Eligible participants receive a monthly food package that is intended to supplement the diets of these vulnerable groups. The package includes canned fruits and vegetables, canned meats, pasta or rice, dry beans or peanut butter, fruit juices, dry cereals, cheese, powdered and canned milk, and cereal. We also try to augment the nutritional value of these packages by adding fresh produce and dairy products whenever possible.

Care and Share currently provides CSFP boxes to 1400 seniors in El Paso, Bent, Crowley, Dolores, Kiowa, La Plata, Lincoln, and Otero counties.

For more information about the CSFP program please contact Danette Flickinger, USDA and Food Safety Program Manager at 719-434-4683 or danette@careandshare.org

Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is good, nutritious food that’s “in” when school is “out”.  Its purpose is to ensure that children in low-income areas can continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to school lunch or breakfast. In summer 2011, Care and Share will administer 13 SFSP sites in El Paso, Pueblo, Teller, Crowley, and Montezuma counties.

For more information about SFSP, please contact Jennifer Mariano, Director of Programs at 719-434-4676 or Jennifer@careandshare.org
